The Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) has consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing airports in the country, and based on passenger utilization, remained the third busiest airport in North Carolina in 2023. July 2023 was another record breaking month of passenger utilization with 244,504 passengers flying to or from AVL, a 24.4% increase from July 2022. In 2023, an impressive 2,246,411 passengers traveled to or from AVL, a 22.2% increase over 2022 figures, catapulting the airport's annual passenger count beyond the historic two million mark for the first time ever.
The airport currently has 27 nonstop airport destinations available, many of which are international hubs making connectivity to the world easy to and from AVL.
AIRPORT FAST FACTS ► AVL is located just 12 miles from downtown, offers frequent nonstop flights daily to and from 27 destinations, including numerous international hubs, and is served by six airlines: Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, Sun Country, and United. ► TSA Pre✓® is available at AVL.
NEW AIR SERVICE ON THE HORIZON ► Allegiant's 19th nonstop destination to and from AVL starts in May 2024, with four weekly flights between AVL and Orlando International Airport (MCO).
In August 2023, the airport broke ground on a significant infrastructure project that will result in a new airport terminal 150% larger than before. The first concourse will be open for passenger use in approximately two years. Upon completion, the project will yield a terminal that stands 150% larger than the current airport. The airport will grow from seven gates to twelve, with ample room for further expansion.
The new design concept, inspired by the natural beauty of the western North Carolina mountains, will feature a spacious and bright grand lobby, state-of-the-art ticketing and baggage claim areas, an inviting concessions plaza and thoughtfully designed gate areas to enhance passenger comfort and experience.
